In this series, we attempt to answer some of these burning questions. It’s giving the public what they want.

Question: How many penalties has Kanu scored in the Africa Cup of Nations?

Answer: In an international career which stretched over 16 years, it is perhaps surprising that Kanu only scored 12 times for Nigeria.

The future Arsenal and Ajax star was a vital part of the Nigeria side which won the under-17 World Championship in 1993 – his flashy performances earning him a call-up to the full squad in the following year.

He made his debut against Sweden in 1994 but his first international goal came in 1995 as the Super Eagles beat host nation Uzbekistan 3-2 in the final of the Afro-Asian Cup.

Interestingly, Kanu never scored a goal in the finals of an African Cup of Nations tournament, despite his country winning the 1994 tournament and taking third place in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2010.

He did score four times in qualifiers, though. He struck twice against Malawi in June 2003, once against the Ugandans in March 2007  (notably, Berti Vogts first competitive win as coach) and once in Niger two months later – a finish which proved to be his last in a Super Eagles shirt.

None of those goals came from the penalty spot though, meaning Nwankwo Kanu’s Africa Cup of Nations penalty scoring tally stands at an indisputable zero.
